FlightLink

A Marketplace for Private Flight Sharing

Project Overview

FlightLink is an innovative web application designed to revolutionize private air travel by introducing a ride-share model for aircraft owners and passengers. By allowing aircraft owners to sell remaining seats on their flights, FlightLink enables aircraft owners and operators to distribute costs while providing a premium, professional, and private flight experience for guests. This marketplace bridges the gap between private aviation and shared travel, making luxury flights more accessible without compromising quality.

Leveraging our extensive experience working with aviation-focused clients—especially those involved in booking systems, private charters, and web application development—our team collaborated closely with FlightLink to build the core marketplace application and an accompanying marketing website. Our responsibilities included project management, business analysis, functional design, UI/UX design, and development, ensuring a seamless experience for flight sellers and buyers.

FlightLink required a robust platform to support two distinct user types: aircraft owners looking to sell seats and customers seeking to book available flights. The application needed to handle complex workflows, pricing structures, and approval processes while maintaining an intuitive, user-friendly interface. 10 Pound Gorilla’s task was to create a scalable and efficient digital ecosystem that simplified private flight booking while empowering aircraft owners with multiple flexible pricing options and passenger management tools.

Key Takeaways

  • Innovative Marketplace Model – Successfully positioned private aviation within a ride-sharing framework, opening new opportunities for cost-sharing and accessibility.
  • Dual User Experience – Designed a seamless interface for aircraft owners managing flights and passengers booking seats.
  • Advanced Business Logic – Implemented intricate pricing, payment, and approval workflows, ensuring flexibility while maintaining a smooth booking experience.
  • Scalable & Secure Platform – Built a robust, future-proof solution capable of handling growth and evolving business needs.
  • Comprehensive Marketing Website – Developed a high-converting website to communicate FlightLink’s value proposition to both user groups.

What we focused on

User-Centric Workflow Design

One of the project's most complex aspects was mapping out user journeys and workflow diagrams to accommodate the various booking and pricing scenarios. Aircraft owners needed the flexibility to set different pricing structures for seats, review and approve passenger requests, and confirm flight details seamlessly. Simultaneously, passengers required a streamlined booking process with clear pricing, flight detail management, profile management, and confirmation notifications.

To address this, we conducted an in-depth business analysis, working closely with FlightLink’s stakeholders to develop workflow diagrams that captured every possible scenario. This structured approach ensured that developers, product owners, and end-users had a clear understanding of the system’s functionality and interactions.

Business Logic & Payment Structures

Building a marketplace with multiple pricing models and approval processes required significant attention to detail. FlightLink allowed aircraft owners to:

  • Set fixed or dynamic pricing based on demand and availability.
  • Implement approval-based bookings, where owners could review and accept or decline passenger requests before finalizing a sale.
  • Integrate multiple payment methods for seamless transactions.

Our team carefully architected the application’s backend to support these variations, ensuring smooth transactions while maintaining an intuitive experience for users. The complexity of these workflows required rigorous testing and refinement to balance flexibility with usability.

Marketing & Product Integration

Beyond developing the core marketplace, we also designed and built FlightLink’s marketing website. This site serves as the informational hub for prospective users, clearly outlining how the platform works while catering to the needs of both aircraft owners and passengers.

We focused on:

  • Crafting compelling messaging that speaks to the distinct needs of both user groups.
  • Designing an intuitive, visually engaging website that enhances credibility and trust.
  • Ensuring a seamless transition between marketing content and the core application, creating a cohesive user journey.

Project Challenges, Successes & Lessons Learned

Every marketplace application comes with inherent challenges, and FlightLink was no exception. The most significant hurdles revolved around:

  1. Handling Complex Pricing & Approval Workflows – Balancing the need for pricing flexibility while maintaining a straightforward user experience required attention to detail and iterative design and development.
  2. Ensuring Clarity in User Journeys – Given the dual-sided nature of the platform, clear communication of the booking and approval processes was crucial. Our detailed workflow mapping and UI/UX refinements helped simplify these interactions.
  3. Building a Scalable Architecture – FlightLink needed a system to accommodate future growth, including potential integrations with additional payment gateways, scheduling tools, and regulatory compliance features.

Through meticulous planning, iterative design, and close collaboration with FlightLink’s team, we delivered a platform that met both business and user needs while laying the groundwork for future expansion.
