Highlands Ranch Community Association

A Website as Strong as the Community It Serves

Project Overview

Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA) is the leading organization managing the community of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, one of the most successful master-planned communities in the country. HRCA oversees architectural control, covenant enforcement, community recreation facilities, and the 8,200-acre Backcountry Wilderness Area management. With an annual budget of approximately $23 million and a staff of nearly 800, HRCA plays a crucial role in maintaining a high-quality life for its 100,000+ residents.

HRCA partnered with 10 Pound Gorilla to modernize its website and improve its content structure, ensuring a user-friendly experience for residents and visitors. The primary objectives were to enhance the website's functionality, streamline access to community resources, and implement a design that reflects the vibrancy of Highlands Ranch while maintaining its branding. Our role encompassed project management, business analysis, UI/UX design, content optimization, and development. We communicated regularly with HRCA's internal teams to create an engaging and intuitive digital presence.

The redesigned website aimed to serve HRCA's diverse audience, including residents seeking information on amenities, events, and governance and prospective homeowners looking to explore the benefits of living in Highlands Ranch. Additionally, HRCA required seamless access to its activity guides, event registrations, and Backcountry Wilderness Area resources—all integrated within a cohesive and easy-to-navigate platform.

Key Takeaways

  • Enhanced User Experience – The redesigned website offers a more intuitive navigation structure, ensuring residents and prospective homeowners can quickly find relevant information.

  • Seamless Website Migration – A well-executed 301 redirect strategy preserved search engine rankings and ensured a smooth transition for users.
  • Improved Accessibility & SEO – The new site follows best practices for accessibility and search optimization, making content more discoverable and inclusive.
  • Scalable & Future-Proofed Solution – Built on DNN with reusable content elements, the website provides long-term flexibility for growth and updates.

What we focused on

Website Content Strategy

HRCA's website serves as a central hub for residents, guests, and prospective homeowners, offering a wealth of information about community amenities, events, governance, and recreation. However, one of the primary challenges of the previous site was content discoverability—users often struggled to find the information they needed quickly and efficiently.

We conducted a comprehensive content audit to address this and worked closely with HRCA to restructure the website's information architecture. We focused on creating an intuitive navigation system that simplifies access to key resources while ensuring content remains organized and user-friendly. By consolidating pages, streamlining navigation, and applying SEO and accessibility best practices, we enhanced the site's overall usability. The result is a well-structured, easy-to-navigate platform that allows all users—whether long-time residents or first-time visitors—to find relevant information and engage with the community quickly.

Creative Design Work

A visually engaging and well-structured website was a key priority for HRCA, ensuring that content remains dynamic and easy to manage. We implemented a structured content approach to achieve this, providing HRCA’s content editors with high-quality, reusable building blocks for creating feature-rich pages. Elements such as galleries, accordions, and imagery are seamlessly integrated into the design, allowing for visually compelling layouts while maintaining consistency with HRCA’s brand.

By leveraging DNN (DotNetNuke) and implementing a structured content editing system, we empowered HRCA’s staff to manage and update their website with minimal training. This approach streamlines content creation and safeguards the site’s design integrity, ensuring that all pages adhere to established SEO and accessibility best practices. The result is a flexible yet controlled content editing experience that enables HRCA to evolve its digital presence without compromising usability or performance.

Project Successes, Challenges, & Lessons Learned

Every large-scale website overhaul presents unique challenges, and HRCA’s project was no exception. Two key areas required careful planning and execution to ensure a seamless transition: the launch strategy, particularly the 301 redirect implementation, and the migration of HRCA’s extensive collection of forms.

One of the biggest technical challenges was preserving user experience and search engine rankings following a significant restructuring of HRCA’s website. With several hundred pages undergoing reorganization, we developed a comprehensive 301 redirect strategy to ensure that legacy links—bookmarked by users or still appearing in Google search results—seamlessly direct visitors to the appropriate new pages. This approach minimized broken links, maintained HRCA’s search presence, and ensured a smooth transition for returning users.

Another critical project component was migrating approximately 75 contact, registration, and payment forms. Given the complexity and volume of these forms, we conducted a form audit and inventory to streamline the migration process, allowing us to identify consolidation opportunities, reduce redundancy, and improve usability. Additionally, we enhanced the design and styling of the forms to align with HRCA’s updated branding and user experience goals. By implementing a structured process for rebuilding and optimizing these forms, we ensured that this essential aspect of the website was functional and visually polished.

These challenges reinforced the importance of meticulous planning, strategic content mapping, and a user-first approach to website migration. Through careful execution, we successfully transitioned HRCA to a modern, user-friendly platform while preserving its digital footprint and improving site functionality.
